Brett Mackie

Brett Mackie is a highly respected cultural heritage and native title specialist with nearly 30 years of experience across government, corporate, and community sectors. He is recognised nationally for his authoritative expertise in Indigenous relations, cultural heritage management, and native title negotiations, having worked extensively with Traditional Owner groups, Land Councils, State and Federal agencies, and multinational resource companies.

Brett’s career has spanned roles of increasing responsibility, from senior advisory and executive leadership positions through to on-the-ground stakeholder engagement. He has led the development and implementation of large-scale cultural heritage and native title strategies for high-profile infrastructure, mining, and energy projects across Queensland, New South Wales, and the Northern Territory. His work has included managing field survey programs, negotiating complex Cultural Heritage Management Plans (CHMPs), and guiding sustainable Indigenous engagement frameworks in sensitive and challenging environments.

Notably, Brett has held senior leadership positions with Glencore, Rio Tinto Coal Australia, Arrow Energy, and the Department of Mines and Energy, where he was instrumental in shaping policy and operational responses to Indigenous land access. He has also provided consultancy advice to Native Title Representative Bodies and industry clients, delivering strategic counsel on agreement-making, compliance, and Indigenous economic development.

Brett is a proven leader with a track record of managing high-performing multidisciplinary teams and stakeholder groups. He brings a collaborative and outcomes-focused approach to his work, with deep respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge systems and cultural values. His experience navigating complex political, legal, and operational environments makes him a trusted advisor on all matters relating to cultural heritage, native title, and Indigenous stakeholder engagement.
